Practical Bastard Sword

By customer request CAS` have produced a re-enactment version of our the Original Bastard sword. The blade is forged in 5160 high-carbon steel, to minimize burring, and the transverse thickness of the guard has been increased, both to provide adequate strength for re-enactment use and to present a safer profile at the ends of the guard. Another innovation is the provision of an all-leather scabbard, in contrast with the rigid scabbards normally provided with the Practical swords - this is designed both to provide an extra margin of safety when combatants fall on the scabbard in battle and also to minimize the need for replacement scabbards. The sword is supplied with the grip and scabbard in a neutral-coloured leather to allow customization to the owners taste. Bushido Katana

Each piece in the Bushido group has a hand-forged and folded ASSAB-K120C powder steel blade, differentially tempered to produce an HRC60 edge, HRC40 back and a distinctive hamon. Saya are deeply lacquered in old gold with inlaid brass sakura flowers. Quality ray skin is used on the tsuka of the Katana and Wakizashi, while the tsuka of the Tanto is of gold-plated brass with a battle-scene decoration in relief. The tsuba of the Katana and Wakizashi is of blackened and bronzed iron, with detailing in gold and silver and a battle scene decoration. The tsuka-ito on the Katana and Wakizashi and the sageo on all three pieces are woven from Japanese cotton. The fuchi and kashira are of blackened bronze with brass detailing, and the kojira, koiguchi and kurigata are of polished horn. The habaki is brass. The Katana and Wakizashi blades are ungrooved, while the Tanto blade is grooved on both sides. The Katana and Wakizashi have medium length Kissaki. Tsunami Tanto

Each piece in the Tsunami Series has a hand-forged T10 high-carbon steel blade (nagasa) and is differentially tempered using a traditional claying method. The tsuba, fuchi, & kashira are made of black iron and marked with the Tomoe crest (mon). The temper lines (hamon) are evident and prominent. Each piece has a deeply lacquered black saya with a one-piece brass habaki construction. Real ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka, and the tsuka-ito and sageo are made of premium woven Japanese black cotton. The katana and wakizashi are constructed with a large o-kissaki and are ideal for cutting exercises (tameshigiri). The handle on the tanto is an attractive ribbed buffalo horn. Early Medieval Single Hand Tinker Pearce Sharp

The Early Medieval Sword is typical of the 13th-14th century single hand swords but the Type XII blade was known to be in use from as early as the late Viking era. This version features a sharp Marquenched spring steel blade. As with all Medieval Tinker models, this sword is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Each blade is forged from 5160 spring steel, Marquenched to the desired hardness of 50-53 HRC while the tang is drawn back to the low 30s HRC. Solingen Main Gauche antiqued

Based on models of 17th century swept-hilt rapiers of Germanic ancestry, our Solingen Rapier with matching main gauche is an excellent rendition of the timely originals. The blades are constructed of forged high-carbon steel and are equipped with leather scabbards. The guard has a beautiful design with S-curved quillons to protect the hand and for wrapping the fingers around to increase one´s grip strength. Low Lander Two Handed Great Sword antiqued

Wielded with untamed ferocity on many a Gaelic battlefield, the massive Lowlander sword vividly illustrates the might of the Scots of old. Saxon

CAS Hanwei’s smiths have outdone themselves with their recreation of a 9th Century Saxon sword by replicating a technique used by the Saxons and Vikings and producing a stunning blade that features a pattern-welded core with high-carbon edge sections. This technique was used by the old-time smiths as a means of producing blades (just for the rich folks) that were sharp, resilient and decorative and eleven hundred years on, CAS Hanwei has made them affordable. Sparring Jian Sword

Traditionally Chinese Martial Artists have used wooden "wasters" during sparring practice to inform their training and perfect their technique. Toyotomi Hideyoshi Katana

Toyotomi Hideyoshi, born Hiyoshimaru in 1536, rose from peasant status to chief minister of the emperor in 1585 in attempt to complete the goal of unification of Japan by his fallen leader Oda Nobunaga. In 1568 when Nobunaga began his siege of central Japan Hideyoshi fought in many of those important battles. His judicious behavior, positive countenance and intelligence helped him rise through the ranks. Though his lowly origins bely the latter of those traits, Hideyoshi was the architect of many reforms of feudalism in Japan as well as becoming a master of the tea ceremony and educated himself in secret. In 1577 Nobunaga charged Hideyoshi with the subjugation of western Japan. After the betrayal of Nobunaga's retainer, Akechi Mitsuhide, and Nobunaga's suicide, Hideyoshi sought immediate revenge on his leader’s traitor and defeated him at the Battle of Yamazaki.Hideyoshi followed by securing the line of succession by Nobunaga's grandson. After subduing one the powerful vassals supporting Nobunaga's third son, Hideyoshi began fortifying the country by securing all the strongholds and building Osaka castle. Soon after he started the unification process of Japan to complete his mentor's work. After battling Tokugawa Ieyasu which led to a draw, they ended their conflict with an alliance. In 1585 Hideyoshi was appointed kampuku (chancellor to the emperor) and was given the family name of Toyotomi. After subduing the last of the resistance with his new ally, Ieyasu, they went about securing power and stability for Japan by disarming the population, reducing the number of castles and strongholds within the country and freezing the social classes. Hideyoshi abolished road checkpoints to encourage travel and trade. He also conducted large land surveys to develop mineral resources for the formation of coinage to also assist with economic growth.In 1590, Hideyoshi was the head of daimyo alliance the formed the government of national unification. Soon after Hideyoshi passed on his position of kampuku to his nephew, Toyotomi Hidetsugu. In 1592 Hideyoshi began an invasion of Korea which ended in failure but tried again in 1597 and failed. Hideyoshi died in 1601 at the age of 62 where he spent his latter years burdened by his defeat in Korea. Two years after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's death, Ieyasu took control of the government and founded the Tokugawa shogunate. Ieyasu continued Hideyoshi's policies of unification which led into a time of peace in the Tokugawa era.Hanwei has created a genuine piece of sword art with the Toyotomi Hideyoshi Katana. Viking Throwing Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 2.5 cm. Spearheads only are supplied. The Nordic warrior frequently carried several light Throwing Spears into combat. This style displays the narrow, sharply pointed head designed to pierce mail. Scottish Mortuary Hilt Sword antiqued

Replicated from an original in the collection of the Royal Armouries in England, our Mortuary Hilt Sword is a classic example of a cavalry or dragoon officer´s sword of the 17th century English Civil War period. Deriving its name from the style of sword which memorialized King Charles I, who was executed in 1649, The Mortuary Hilt Sword´s steel basket is decorated with scrolled foliage while an engraved head of Charles I appears on the pommel. The lozenge-section double-edged blade is partially fullered and bears the swordmaker´s mark "1414", the derivation of which has been lost in time. The leather handle wrap terminates in silver wire "Turks Head" knots. The sword, like the original, is beautifully balanced. The sword is available in both polished and antiqued finishes. Both hilts are crafted from stainless steel, to minimize maintenance, that of the normal version is being polished while the "antiqued" version has a museum-quality patina. This hand and a half sword features a Type XVIIIa blade with a strong central ridge and diamond profile. The tapered oval grip feels fantastic in hand while the second hand easily slides over the wheel pommel when extra leverage is required. This blunt trainer features a Marquenched spring steel blade with a 3/4 length fuller to allow for the required thicker edges for safe sparring practice. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Musashi XL Light Katana

Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous swordmaster in Japanese history, fought more than 60 duels before retiring and writing his famous treatise on swordplay, the "Book of Five Rings". Development of the two-sword style of swordplay, with the Daito (long sword) and Wakizashi being used together, is credited to Musashi. Mounted in black, the Musashi Katana is faithful to the original down to the famous double-ring iron tsubas. The tsuka-ito is in leather over ray skin. The blade is hand-forged in high-carbon steel, with new geometry to enhance cutting ability. Hunter Katana

The Hunter Katana is built on the Hanwei L6/Bainite blade in the Shinogi Zukuri style, and featuring superb koshirae, the Hunter is a very desirable and functional piece. The subdued green silk ito and green striped lacquered saya compliment the blackened tsuba with golden accents, featuring a raptor stalking his next prey. Bainite is a structure of high-carbon steel that combines great strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. One of the rapidly growing arts within historical fencing societies is that of sabre fencing in the late 19th century Italian style, originating with fencing masters who were employed to train mounted troops in the effective use of the military sabre. The Milanese fencing master Guiseppe Radaelli, is credited with starting the development of this style, while Salvatore Pecoraro introduced changes and refinements which resulted in the technique finally adopted for sabre at the Military Masters School in Rome. The hilt designs developed by Radaelli and Pecoraro have been reproduced in our fencing sabers, with stainless steel guards and wire-wrapped sharkskin-pattern grips. Survival Kukri

For over 20 years Hanwei has been known as the leader in producing high quality, traditionally crafted and functional swords and related weaponry. During this time we have often wondered, what would a high-performance Kukri designed by Hanwei be like? The wait is over. And the answer is exceptional. The Kukri (or khukuri, khukri, etc.) and it's use as both a weapon of war and survival tool is legendary. Typically forged of high carbon steel and heat treated with the simplest of methods (literally poured water over a hot blade) the basic design and construction of the Nepalese Khukuri has been unchanged for centuries. Freed from strict tradition Hanwei has tasked themselves with designing a new modern classic Kukri. They've kept the shape, the balance and the high carbon steel but the rest is substantially upgraded. The heat-treat is now precisely controlled pulling every ounce of performance out of the forged 5160 spring steel, a steel so well regarded in the knife community it is often used for ABS performance test knives. The result holds an edge exceptionally well with a spine soft enough to absorb the stress of repeated impacts. The grip is the biggest change from tradition, and the most welcome. The pommel and guard are stainless steel while the grip is injection molded into a grippy but comfortable pattern. After precise fitting of the guard, grip and pommel the substantial thru-tang is peened and welded in place, resulting in a knife that feels as if it was formed of a solid piece of steel. Viking Thrusting Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 2.5 cm. Spearheads only are supplied. The Viking Thrusting Spear was more commonly used than swords, being much less expensive to produce. The wings or lugs, of Frankish origin, both limited the penetration of the weapon and provided an effective parrying guard. Total head length is 41 cm. Oni Katana

The Oni are mythical creatures from Japanese folklore similar to western demons or trolls. In modern culture they are beginning to move away from this menacing connotation into the role of guardian or protector, similar in character to gargoyles. Their power and ferocity, however, have not diminished. There is a Japanese saying which translates to "Oni with an iron club", or to be of an invincible nature, a fitting association with the 29" L6/Bainite blade on which our Oni Katana is built. The blade features the geometry of our Performance Series for outstanding cutting ability. The 14" tsuka is wrapped in black ray skin and silk ito while the Koshirae feature Oni in various classical styles. A unique combination of folklore and functionality. Practical 11th Century Sword

Another new addition to our line of un-edged "practical" European weapons for use in re-enactment and stage combat. The Practical 11th Century Sword features a "tea-cosy" pommel and a sculptured cross that curves gently towards the blade. The broad blade has full-length fullers and is very lively for an un-edged blade. It weighs around 950 grams. Our Practical broadswords are all based on authentically styled swords in our collection but they are tailored to meet the needs of re-enactment and stage combat. These very popular and affordable weapons feature authentic hilt styling, with fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blades. They are designed to withstand rugged use while providing the level of safety required by many of today´s re-enactment societies. The blades are crafted from 1065 high-carbon steel, hardened to 50HRC, which restricts edge-notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and protection against brittleness. While the blades are substantial, they are fullered to provide balance and good handling characteristics. They feature 2 mm wide edges and rounded tips for safety. The tangs are also substantial, with radiused corners at the blade shoulders and no welds. The end of the tang is riveted over the pommel, which both eliminates any possibility of inadvertent disassembly and provides a traditional means of tightening a loose hilt. Ching sword

The traditional perception of the form of the T'ai Chi sword becomes very apparent in the Ch'ing Sword. The last of the Chinese Dynasties, the Ch'ing (or Quing) Dynasty was overthrown by rebellion as late as 1911, by which time the T'ai Chi sword had completed its evolution in to the "modern" form. Viking Short-Bladed Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 1". Spearheads only are supplied. The Viking Short Bladed Spear is typical of those of Celtic origin, imported into Scandinavia. Cawood

The celebrated Cawood Sword, named after its discovery location near Cawood Castle in England, is regarded as one of the finest and best-preserved examples of an 11th century Viking sword in existence. Preserved in the mud of the bed of the River Ouse for almost a millennium, the sword has now found a permanent home in the Yorkshire Museum, where it is a leading attraction. What is almost certainly a “sister” sword was unearthed in Norway in 1888, giving a valuable clue to the Cawood Sword’s origin. Hanwei’s version of the sword replicates the lobated pommel and steeply down curved quillons of the hilt perfectly, while the wide-fullered blade is reproduced in 5160 high-carbon steel. Miao Dao - L6

The Miao Dao, the "grain leaf" sabre, receives its name from the early 20th century despite its ancient origin. Its history is a subject of debate among some scholars and sword enthusiasts but all agree about its reemergence in the mid-16th century by General Qi Jiguang who resurrected the sword to combat pirates raiding coastal cities. After the victory over the pirates the Miao Dao remained useful battling enemies of the Ming Empire which led to this famous general's men to be known as the "invincible Qi army". Highly coveted by the soldiers the swords didn't pass along this weapon easily.This beautiful Hanwei Maio Dao is the pinnacle of Chinese sword craftsmanship. This verion features a 31 1/2" L6 steel blade with a groove on on both sides of the blade to lighten the balance. Oda Nobunaga

Of the legends of feudal Japan, the name Oda Nobunaga needs little introduction. Newly designed by Hanwei we commemorate this powerful 16th century daimyo in steel instead of words. The 27" forged steel blade features a prominent hamon as well as hi to make the sword quick and light at 2 lbs 6 oz. A beautiful curved symmetry flows from the 1" kissaki to the kashira. The tsuba is a classic Hanwei design of Oda Nobunaga which is often imitated but never truly replicated. The front of the tsuba bears his likeness and mon whereas the blade side depicts two soldiers with yari subduing an enemy. The fuchi is embossed with a gold flintlock and powder bag which pays homage to Oda’s fondness of tanegashima firearms. Embossed in silver and gold is a finely detailed rendering of Oda’s kabuto (helmet). The 11 1/2" tsuka is wrapped in green Japanese cotton over black dyed same (ray skin) which is contrasted by the Nobunaga mon in silver and gold as well. Tokugawa Katana

One of the “great unifiers” and legends of feudal Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu, was a master tactician as well as political strategist. Much can be said of Ieysau for his bold yet prudent quick reactions to seize opportunities, but his long game tactics proved most successful. After years of clever maneuvering and military battles, Ieyasu traded his five home provinces for eight in the Kanto province after conquering them with one of his top rivals Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This ingenious move isolated him from Hideyoshi’s rule and allowed for autonomy in becoming the second most powerful daimyo in Japan. This move spawned the Japanese proverb “Ieyasu won the Empire by retreating.”After Hideyoshi’s death, Ieyasu became one of the regents in the Council of Five Elders that would rule on behalf of his young son, Hideyori. A year later, one of the oldest and most respected regents dies creating an opportunity for control. Ieyasu takes Osaka Caste, the residence of Hideyori, and infuriates the other regents. At the Battle of Sekigahara he found himself almost outnumbered two to one. But like his deceased friend and ally, Oda Nobunaga, Ieyasu made use of firearms and had some arquebuses smuggled in for the battle along with some added behind the scenes negotiating with some of the daimyo in the Western Army. Ending in complete and total victory, Ieyasu became shogun in March of 1603 which created the Tokugawa shogunate which lasted til 1868 which is referred to as the Edo period. Ronin Katana

The Story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most celebrated and influential tales of the Samurai from the Edo period. Lord Asano was a powerful Daimyo ordered by the Shogun to entertain guests of the Imperial Family. The highest ranking master of protocol, Kira, was given the task of teaching Asano, among others, proper matters of etiquette in this task. Lord Asano and Kira quickly grew to dislike each other and the teacher insulted his student at every opportunity. No longer able to contain himself, Asano drew his sword upon Kira, wounding him in the attack. This act led to Asano´s ordered suicide (seppuku) and the confiscation of his property. On December 14, 1702, nearly one year after Asano´s death, 47 of Asano´s men (now Ronin), descended upon the mansion of Kira to exact their revenge. After a fierce battle, the Ronin demanded that Kira commit seppuku for his transgressions against their former master. When he refused he was beheaded. For their actions the Ronin were themselves sentenced to death by seppuku. They are buried together at the Sengakuji, offering a true testament to the loyalty inherent in the Samurai. American Revolutionary Hanger

During the 1700's the word "hanger" referred to the short sabers carried by the infantry, because it hung from a foot soldier's equipment belt, often next to his bayonet. Based on an original of the period, our American Revolutionary Hanger (or Cutte) is accurately sized and antiqued to replicate a museum piece. The fully tempered, high carbon steel blade has a distal taper, with fullers on both sides along the spine, and is light and quick. The hilt fittings are cast in solid steel, matching the locket and chape of the leather-covered scabbard. Made by Hanwei.
