Early Medieval Single Hand Tinker Pearce Sharp

The Early Medieval Sword is typical of the 13th-14th century single hand swords but the Type XII blade was known to be in use from as early as the late Viking era. This version features a sharp Marquenched spring steel blade. As with all Medieval Tinker models, this sword is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Each blade is forged from 5160 spring steel, Marquenched to the desired hardness of 50-53 HRC while the tang is drawn back to the low 30s HRC. Tinker Bastard Sword Sharp with fuller

Like the longswords, these Bastard swords are based on the Oakeshott Type XVIIIA and are designed so that both the sharp and blunt versions will perform identically in the hand, offering the possiblity of sparring and cutting with swords that feel and respond in exactly the same way. The sharp blade is produced in two slightly different versions, one diamond-sectioned throughout its length and the other almost identical but fullered for about one third of its length. CAS Hanwei’s smiths have outdone themselves with their recreation of a 9th Century Saxon sword by replicating a technique used by the Saxons and Vikings and producing a stunning blade that features a pattern-welded core with high-carbon edge sections. Yasukuni Captains Gunto

This sword replicates the Gunto of a high-ranking Japanese army officer of the Pre-WWII and WWII era. These swords were made from 1933 onwards by a group of highly-skilled sword smiths at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo and are known collectively as the Yasukuni swords. Hand and a Half Tinker Pearce Blunt Trainer

This hand and a half sword features a Type XVIIIa blade with a strong central ridge and diamond profile. The tapered oval grip feels fantastic in hand while the second hand easily slides over the wheel pommel when extra leverage is required. This blunt trainer features a Marquenched spring steel blade with a 3/4 length fuller to allow for the required thicker edges for safe sparring practice. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Each blade is forged from 5160 spring steel, Marquenched to the desired hardness of 50-53 HRC while the tang is drawn back to the low 30s HRC. A legend of many names, the Tiger of Kai, Shinano no Kami, and competitor for power to Tokugawa Ieysau , Oda Nobunaga and Uesugi Kenshin, Takeda Shingen commanded respect on the battlefield as well as the political arena. Representing the best and worst of the romantic perception of the feudal lords of the time, Takeda had some of the most forward thinking political ideals as a ruler over his people. Ching sword

The traditional perception of the form of the T'ai Chi sword becomes very apparent in the Ch'ing Sword. 1881 Shaska Sabre

Survival Kukri

For over 20 years Hanwei has been known as the leader in producing high quality, traditionally crafted and functional swords and related weaponry. During this time we have often wondered, what would a high-performance Kukri designed by Hanwei be like? The wait is over. And the answer is exceptional. The Kukri (or khukuri, khukri, etc.) and it's use as both a weapon of war and survival tool is legendary. Typically forged of high carbon steel and heat treated with the simplest of methods (literally poured water over a hot blade) the basic design and construction of the Nepalese Khukuri has been unchanged for centuries. Freed from strict tradition Hanwei has tasked themselves with designing a new modern classic Kukri. They've kept the shape, the balance and the high carbon steel but the rest is substantially upgraded. The heat-treat is now precisely controlled pulling every ounce of performance out of the forged 5160 spring steel, a steel so well regarded in the knife community it is often used for ABS performance test knives. The result holds an edge exceptionally well with a spine soft enough to absorb the stress of repeated impacts. The grip is the biggest change from tradition, and the most welcome. The pommel and guard are stainless steel while the grip is injection molded into a grippy but comfortable pattern. After precise fitting of the guard, grip and pommel the substantial thru-tang is peened and welded in place, resulting in a knife that feels as if it was formed of a solid piece of steel. Tinker 9th Century Viking sharp

While not a direct copy of any particular sword, the Viking sword design was inspired by historical examples from the early 9th Century, most notably finds from the area around Trondheim, Norway, where the circular indentation hilt decoration was popular. The scabbards are provided with suspension points and a period chape, giving the sheathed sword a very attractive appearance. The construction of the Viking "pair" differs from other swords in the Tinker series in as much as they are tang-riveted (peened) in period fashion at the pommel, primarily to satisfy Viking re-enactment requirements. As with the other swords in the series, replacement blades are available. Again, the handling characteristics of the two swords are virtually identical. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Renaissance wax polish was originally formulated in the British Museum research laboratories in the early 1950's, in response to a discussion amongst museum technicians at an international conference on fine-art conservation. In accelerated ageing tests, the British Museum scientist found that all current commercial waxes based on the usual natural waxes (beeswax and carnauba wax) contained acids which, in time, could spoil original finishes on national historic collections of furniture. He rejected them all and investigated the new so-called 'fossil' or microcrystalline waxes being refined out of crude oil. Viking Thrusting Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 2.5 cm. Spearheads only are supplied. The Viking Thrusting Spear was more commonly used than swords, being much less expensive to produce. Oda Nobunaga

Of the legends of feudal Japan, the name Oda Nobunaga needs little introduction. Newly designed by Hanwei we commemorate this powerful 16th century daimyo in steel instead of words. The 27" forged steel blade features a prominent hamon as well as hi to make the sword quick and light at 2 lbs 6 oz. A beautiful curved symmetry flows from the 1" kissaki to the kashira. The tsuba is a classic Hanwei design of Oda Nobunaga which is often imitated but never truly replicated. The front of the tsuba bears his likeness and mon whereas the blade side depicts two soldiers with yari subduing an enemy. The fuchi is embossed with a gold flintlock and powder bag which pays homage to Oda’s fondness of tanegashima firearms. Embossed in silver and gold is a finely detailed rendering of Oda’s kabuto (helmet). Scottish Basket-Hilt Broadsword (Antiqued)

Although Basket-Hilt swords appeared throughout Britain from the mid-sixteenth century on, their association with the seventeenth and eighteenth century Scottish highlander has become legendary. Our Basket-Hilt Broadsword, replicated from an original in the collection of the Royal Armouries in England, carries a typical Glasgow-style hilt from the mid-18th century. It is likely that the blade of the original sword, marked "Andrea Ferara", was made in Germany a century earlier and re-hilted as basket designs were refined. The sword is available in both polished and antiqued finishes. Both hilts are crafted from stainless steel, to minimize maintenance, that of the normal version being polished while the "antiqued" version has a museum-quality patina. The high-carbon blade of the antiqued version is also lightly "antiqued" to promote authenticity. The grips of the broadswords are covered with wire-wrapped genuine rayskin and the basket liners are crafted in fabric-covered leather. The Oni are mythical creatures from Japanese folklore similar to western demons or trolls. In modern culture they are beginning to move away from this menacing connotation into the role of guardian or protector, similar in character to gargoyles. Hanwei's Dragon Armour, named for the helmet crest (mon), is made for the connoisseur of Japanese armours. It faithfully replicates a Byotoji Do Gusoku from the Edo period which, like many fine armours, incorporates an earlier helmet bowl from the Momoyama period. European influence on Samurai armour is discernible in the slight median ridge to the front section of the byotoji okegawa do (breastplate) which, by this period, was designed to deflect musket balls. The plates of the do, with waved edges, are fastened with elaborate shakudo rivets in the form of flowers with gilt centers. This feature illustrates the Japanese preference for a more flexible style of armour than the typical European one-piece breastplate construction. Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous swordmaster in Japanese history, fought more than 60 duels before retiring and writing his famous treatise on swordplay, the "Book of Five Rings". Development of the two-sword style of swordplay, with the Daito (long sword) and Wakizashi being used together, is credited to Musashi. Ronin Katana

The Story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most celebrated and influential tales of the Samurai from the Edo period. Lord Asano was a powerful Daimyo ordered by the Shogun to entertain guests of the Imperial Family. The highest ranking master of protocol, Kira, was given the task of teaching Asano, among others, proper matters of etiquette in this task. Lord Asano and Kira quickly grew to dislike each other and the teacher insulted his student at every opportunity. No longer able to contain himself, Asano drew his sword upon Kira, wounding him in the attack. This act led to Asano´s ordered suicide (seppuku) and the confiscation of his property. On December 14, 1702, nearly one year after Asano´s death, 47 of Asano´s men (now Ronin), descended upon the mansion of Kira to exact their revenge. After a fierce battle, the Ronin demanded that Kira commit seppuku for his transgressions against their former master. When he refused he was beheaded. For their actions the Ronin were themselves sentenced to death by seppuku. They are buried together at the Sengakuji, offering a true testament to the loyalty inherent in the Samurai. The Miao Dao, the "grain leaf" sabre, receives its name from the early 20th century despite its ancient origin. Its history is a subject of debate among some scholars and sword enthusiasts but all agree about its reemergence in the mid-16th century by General Qi Jiguang who resurrected the sword to combat pirates raiding coastal cities. Our Basket-Hilt Broadsword carries a typical Glasgow-style hilt from the mid-eighteenth century. It is likely that the blade of the original sword was made in Germany a century earlier and re-hilted as basket designs were refined. Golden Oriole Wakizashi

During the Muromachi period (1568-1603), the introduction of the pairing of the Katana (the curved sword) and Wakizashi was introduced. The Wakizashi, or the shorter companion blade to the Katana, was about 18 inches long. Early Medieval Single Hand Tinker Pearce Blunt Trainer

The Early Medieval Sword is typical of the 13th-14th century single hand swords but the Type XII blade was known to be in use from as early as the late Viking era. This blunt trainer features a Marquenched spring steel blade and is an exceptional match for the I.33 sword and buckler study. As with all Medieval Tinker models, this sword is dismountable. CAS has commissioned Michael `Tinker` Pearce to design a line of swords that will satisfy both the sparring and cutting needs of Western Martial Arts practitioners. Matching sharp and blunt versions of each sword in the series offer the same outstanding handling characteristics in both disciplines. The swords meet Tinker`s exacting quality requirements and are built in much the same way as his custom pieces. Each blade is forged from 5160 spring steel, Marquenched to the desired hardness of 50-53 HRC while the tang is drawn back to the low 30s HRC. For the Medieval models the very end of the tang is threaded to fit an allen nut recessed into the pommel which allows for dismantling of the hilt assembly for inspection, to exchange blades if needed, and for anyone wanting to easily customize their grip. The Sword of St. Maurice - Oakeshott XI.4 This long and slender single handed sword is a reproduction of the one housed in Vienna that dates from the late 11th to early 12th Centuries. This version of the sword leaves behind the likely later additions to the grip and envisions what an earlier version of the sword may have looked like. Certainly a coronation sword of the Holy Roman Empire the hilt is adorned with the Arms of the Empire eagle crest on one side of the pommel and the personal arms of Otto IV (1198-1218) on the other. Uesugi Katana

Uesugi Kenshin was one of feudal Japans most unique and honorable daimyo of Senkugo period. Being born Nageo Kagetora, a third or fourth son, his early years were those of quiet and study until his sickly older brother’s incompetence to rule caused family friends to encourage him to challenge his sibling’s station. After wrestling control from his brother and several well-planned alliances, adoption as heir of the Uesugi klan, some changes in titles in land and several military victories, he rose in power and became known by many names, but specifically the “Dragon of Echigo.” He became renowned for reforms in commerce and agriculture in securing his lands and raising the standard of life for his people.As the legendary Takeda Shingen expanded his territory and power, he soon found his borders under siege and thus began their great rivalry. Mostly just indecisive skirmishes in the beginning, their fourth encounter which would be their largest, the Battle of Kawanakajima, Kenshin employed a new strategy of rotating soldiers on the front line with fresh troops nearly winning the battle. So pitched was this battle Kenshin rode up to Shingen and slashed at him by which Takeda deflected with his famed war fan. Yet depending on whose statistics you believe; many scholars consider this encounter a draw.Such respect Uesugi had for Shingen, when Takeda broke with the Hojo clan who soon after boycotted the Kai Province of salt, Kenshin sent his rival salt from his own province with the message, “I do not fight with salt, but with the sword.” Even at Takeda Shingen’s death, Kenshin said “I have lost my good rival. We won't have a hero like that again!” But even after his rival’s death, Kenshin found a new one in the rising power of Oda Nobunaga. Raptor Shobu Zukuri

The Raptor series, our new line of cutting katanas, has been designed for the cutting practitioner who does not necessarily have access to mats but who wishes to practice and perfect his cutting technique. The blades are forged in 5160 high-carbon steel and specially heat treated to produce very high resilience and greater tolerance of misdirected cuts than a conventional differentially tempered blade. The edge geometry is configured to facilitate the cutting of both soft and semi-hard materials without chipping, allowing the cutter a wide choice of targets. The Raptor Shobu-Zukuri(Iris Leaf) blade has an elegant shape and powerful cutting ability. Notable for the absence of a Yokote transition, this blade design became popular during the Nanbokucho era (1336 ~1392 AD) and its popularity continued into the Muromachi period. Viking Short-Bladed Spear

The decorated spearheads demonstrate the Viking´s creative mix of art and war, whereby weapons often carried intricate patterns, created using the "Niello" process. This involved using an alloy of several metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur which was rubbed into an incised pattern and then fired. Where the alloy is rubbed into the engraving, it remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. Our decorating process uses a little less alchemy, but still provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a shaft diameter of 1". Spearheads only are supplied. The Viking Short Bladed Spear is typical of those of Celtic origin, imported into Scandinavia. The short blade, inherently stiffer and more resistant to bending or breaking, was capable of piercing any body armour of the period. Practical Katana

The ever-popular Practical Katana gives the martial artist the opportunity to own and use a Hanwei sword at the cost of an economy katana sword. The blades are forged and differentially hardened, using the same process as the more expensive katana blades and producing an HRC 60 edge and HRC 40 back. The temper line is authentic and prominent. Cost savings are effected by using fittings which, while making no claims to authenticity, are very strongly built to withstand the rigors of cutting exercises in the dojo. Rapier - Bone Grip

This Swept-Hilt Rapier from Hanwei features classical lines, with a high-carbon steel flex-tempered blade, a stainless steel hilt (for reduced maintenance) and a bone grip. The hilt is of the same size as the museum piece on which it is based, providing an authentic “feel” in the user’s hand and weight and balance also match originals. The blade is interchangeable with our “Practical” blade which is designed for safety in rapier sparring. Also, you can replace the original blade. Radaelli Sabre

One of the rapidly growing arts within historical fencing societies is that of sabre fencing in the late 19th century Italian style, originating with fencing masters who were employed to train mounted troops in the effective use of the military sabre. The Milanese fencing master Guiseppe Radaelli, is credited with starting the development of this style, while Salvatore Pecoraro introduced changes and refinements which resulted in the technique finally adopted for sabre at the Military Masters School in Rome. The hilt designs developed by Radaelli and Pecoraro have been reproduced in our fencing sabers, with stainless steel guards and wire-wrapped sharkskin-pattern grips. The high-carbon flex-tempered steel blades closely follow the proportions of the period and are button-tipped for safety. The blade and hilt of the "Hutton" sabre are closer to the style of the true military sabre. The blade is somewhat shortened and lightened, with a rounded tip for effective training. All hilts will accept both blade styles. A replacement blade is available for the Radaelli and Pecoraro.
