Using items from this section on our website, you will become your own swordsmith. Choose from a wide variety of beautiful parts, all manufactured by the artisans at Windlass Steelcrafts. By mixing and matching these parts hundreds of unique possibilities are possible. You can even have your medieval sword engraved, sharpened and choose a period scabbard. Our master craftsmen will do all assembly of your final sword design at our facility. Pommels are peened in place, not screwed like most mass produced swords. German War Hammer

The proliferation of plate armour across Medieval Europe was shadowed by the development of crushing weapons like this war hammer. Since swords were virtually useless against plate armour, mounted knights used short hammers, axes and maces to defeat an opponent's improved protection. This beautiful, impressive weapon is replicated from an example in the German National Museum in Nuremberg. The steel head is secured to the hardwood shaft with steel langets. Now it is traditional for the Sgian Dubh to be worn in the stocking of the Highlander, and the knife is frequently called a "stocking dirk". Seax

Circa 750 The seax, or sax, was universal in Northern Europe. Carried and used by the Saxons, Angles, Vikings and German tribes, its use probably dates before the fall of Rome and continues on into the early Middle Ages. From small knives with 3-4 inch blades to actual swords with blades of 27-28 inches, always single-edged, the profile of the seax varied a great deal. The original version of this large knife served from camp work to cutting work, on shipboard, and for fighting if a sword or axe was not available. The lobed pommel and guard are brass, and the wood grip is studded with brass tacks, for a very secure and comfortable grip. The blade is etched on both sides, flat ground, and capable of taking and holding a razor sharp edge. The leather sheath has been riveted and laced like the originals and features two thong slots. Ulfberht Sword

An old legend has it that a Nordic smith named Ulfberht developed the first all steel blade. This crucial development achieved near-mythical status among warriors, making this one of the most important swords in the study of medieval weapons. Several of these blades from slightly different time periods exist, some engraved in gratitude and reference with Ulfberht's hallowed name. Prior to the Ulfberht swords, all European swords were of the pattern welded variety. Soft iron bars were welded together with strips of steel, forged into a blade shape, then a steel edge was welded onto the sword. But, the Ulfberht sword was a quantum leap in both technology and design. Not strips, but good carbon steel blades with enough carbon content to produce excellent swords. Not only was the material better, but the design of the sword was a definite improvement. The blade tapered more sharply to the point than did previous blades. This put the balance of the sword closer to the hand, making a sword that was faster on both the stroke and recovery than previous blades. The engravings on both sides of the blade were photocopied exactly. The blade is made of high carbon steel and is beautifully balanced. The grip is wood wrapped with leather. The stout crossguard is steel, and the pommel is of the brazil nut shape that was quite popular at the time, both with Vikings and the rest of Europe. A beautiful and important sword. Genuine Gurkha Regimental Kukri

The genuine Gurkha Regimental Kukri is made by the government contractor Windlass Steelcrafts. Each comes with a regulation sheath. Used with devastating effectiveness by the famous Nepalese Gurkhas in the Siege of Delhi in 1857, in the trenches of WWI France, throughout the New Guinea jungle in WWII, and with distinction in the Falkland Islands. The distinct shape of the Pugio blade was excellent for a close quarters fight, and was used throughout the legions. British 1796 Pattern Light Cavalry Saber

Designed by Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant, the 1796 pattern light cavalry saber was based on Central and Eastern European hussar swords. As a young captain, he observed the clumsy design of the heavy, overly long 1788 Pattern swords. Le Marchant opined that the "blades of the Turks, Mamelukes, Moors, and Hungarians (were) preferable to any other." He gave the blade of this saber a pronounced curve, which made it more adept at cavalry attack methods, and designed it with a widened tip that affected the balance, but made slashes far more brutal. It was issued primarily to British light dragoons and hussars and was also used by the King's German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade profile became so popular that the Prussians and other German states emulated its design throughout the 19th century.This exact replica of an original antique weighs only 1 lb, 12 oz, and the blade features an extreme distal taper, enabling it to feel exceptionally lively. A full 5/8" thick at the hilt, and tapers to a super thin 1/64", 1" from the tip. The blade is hand forged from tough 1080 high carbon steel and spring tempered and arrives fully sharpened.The hilt replicates the originals, with a 5/8" wide knuckle guard, steel spine, and contoured, ribbed leather grip.Complete with accurately reproduced steel scabbard. British 1796 Heavy Cavalry Saber

Used by British Lifeguards, Royal Horse Guards, Dragoon Guards and Dragoons through the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. It was directly copied from the Austrian Pallasch 1769 heavy cavalry sword. British cavalry officer John Le Marchant attentively made drawings of the weapons carried by the Austrian cavalry during the Low Countries Campaign in 1793-95, and likely was involved in the recommendation of this pattern to his superiors. Notable for its use at Salamanca and Waterloo. Technically the 1796 heavy cavalry sword is a backsword, defined as a sword with a straight blade with one cutting edge and a spine (the "back") thickened for most of its length to give added strength. In fact, this is not a delicately maneuverable sword by any stretch of the imagination, and gained favor as a bludgeoning weapon. Troops also used the guard as a knuckle duster. The blade is forged with a single broad fuller on each side. The grip is of ribbed leather. The basket guard has ears which are riveted through the tang of the blade to give the hilt and blade a very secure connection. The hilt combines a disc guard pierced with 2 semicircular and 6 oval holes, with a single knucklebow and two slim 2-inch-long (51 mm) langets (projections from the guard, which grip the throat of the scabbard) extending from the front of the guard. Arrives sharpened and includes steel scabbard.
