Sword Art Online is an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that is played with the aid of Full Dive technology “NerveGear”, which allows a person to load his consciousness into the game. Kirigaya Kazuto, as his alter ego “Kirito”, has been playing the game since its beta phase. When the game is then made publicly available, 10,000 players get the chance to use this groundbreaking technology and play SAO. After some time in the game, all players are teleported to the starting point to receive the news from the developer that anyone who dies in the game will die in real life. Rescue is possible for all players if they can reach level 100 in the game and slay the final boss. A life and death struggle begins. Asuna wouldn’t have minded if she died in SAO, until she met Kirito. Their meeting changes her personality and her outlook on life dramatically. Very soon she takes Kirito’s words to heart.
Asuna is a nice, helpful young woman, who like Kirito, doesn’t want to leave people behind when they are in trouble. She takes the game very seriously and is focused on making it to the end before Kirito explains that she can also enjoy the world of SAO. She often lets herself be led by her feelings, which becomes especially clear as she throws herself in front of Heathcliff’s attack to protect Kirito, and appears to die doing so. She has a hard time dealing with the death of other players.
